The 2016 KuanDu International Animation Festival (KDIAF) closed at TNUA on November 5 with The KuanDog Award for International Short Film going to Italian director Dario Imbrogno's “OSSA.”

Belgian director Chloe Alliez won the KuanDog Award for International Student Short Film for the work “All Their Shades” while the KuanDog Award for Taiwanese Short Film went to “Kite” by director Lin Hsin. Apart from the three KuanDog Awards, six Honorable Mentioned Awards were also announced.

This year, KDIAF received almost 3,000 short films from over 84 countries for competition, and screened 57 nomination films during the week-long event, which opened on Oct. 30.

The festival organizer, the Animation Department of TNUA, expressed excitement about KDIAF’s development.  The numbers of registrations to KDIAF have been climbing, with the number of entries for 2016 doubling that of 2015. The significant growth signifies KDIAF's growing importance and promising future of becoming one of the world's major animation festivals.

Several international masters and guests of honor served as the judges for KuanDon Awards and they also gave lectures and workshops during the one-week festival.

These guests of honor included: Carolina Lopez Caballero, curator of "From Doodles to Pixels: Over a Hundred Year of Spanish Animation"; Roger Gonin, curator of Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival; Cecile Blondel, director of International Relations at Gobelins; South Korean animation director Chang Hyung Yun; Chen-Yi Chang, art director of Disney Studio; Prof. Xue Yanping from the College of Animation, Communication University of China; and scriptwriter Ron Norman.

Gabriel Osorio, the director of the Oscar winning film “Bear Story," was also among the guests. But the 2014 KuanDog Award for International Short Film was the first award that "Bear Story" had won.

Osorio said the first award won in Taiwan is especially meaningful to him and he was happy to be back at the festival.
