Prof. Toru Itaya from the Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts has donated his private collection of 151 books of Japanese theatre to TNUA.

The books, mostly about Japanese popular theatre, range from introductions to works of in-depth research. Prof. Itaya in 2016 conducted a Japanese buyo workshop and gave a lecture on Ryukyu music at an international symposium on East Asian popular theatre, an event hosted by TNUA’s Department of Theatre Arts.

The donation of his books was enabled by assistance by visiting Prof. Naoko Hosoi, who also explained to the TNUA Library staff about the collection. Some of the books are mostly texts, and some others feature mostly pictures. The subjects of the books range from kabuki, bunraku, noh, kyogen, dance and music, covering all aspects of Japanese popular theatre.

Many of the books were published some 50 to 70 years ago, and despite their age, they are still in excellent conditions, showing how Prof. Itaya had been taking good care of his collection.

The TNUA Library also arranged an exhibition of the books, which ended on December 15. TNUA and the Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts are sister schools.
