The Department of Traditional Music arranged master classes and lectures on Vietnamese music in March, featuring three musicians from Vietnam: Huynh Khai, Do Toan Thang, and Le Hai Dang.

The three masters and 30 students from their classes jointly staged a concert on March 22, presenting five pieces of traditional Vietnamese music, “nhac tai tu,” following three weeks of intensive practice.

Mr. Le Hai Dang explained that “nhac tai tu” is music that reflects the ordinary life and culture of Vietnam.

Mr. Huynh Khai and Mr. Do Toan Thang taught the students from the Department of Traditional Music how to play the four major musical instruments used in “nhac tai tu.”

While it usually takes years of practice to master the skills of playing the instruments, Mr. Le Hai Dang said he was amazed at how fast the TNUA students had learned to enable their performance at the concert.

Apart from the concert and master classes, the three musicians also gave six lectures about Vietnamese music in terms of geographic differences, religious beliefs, and cultural significance.
