Prof. Bernd Ruf from Musikhochschule Lubeck (MHL) gave a lecture exploring the possibilities of fusing classical and pop music at the Department of Music on March 12.

Prof. Ruf, a pioneer in promoting crossover between classical and popular music, last visited TNUA in April 2017, during which he conducted a two-week workshop for students in the IMPACT (Interdisciplinary Multimedia Performing Arts Collaborative Technology) music program.

In October 2017, Prof. Ruf and a band from MHL joined students from the Department of Music and IMPACT program to give a jazz concert to raise the curtain on the Kuandu Arts Festival.

In his lecture month, Prof. Ruf noted that all music composers – whether it’s Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, or Rolling Stone – compose music for their contemporaries.

Therefore, when playing music written 200 or 300 years ago, we must ask what the music means in our own times, and what messages it conveys to us, Prof. Ruf said.

Prof. Ruf illustrated the dialogue and interaction between classical and pop music with post-war music in the 1950s and 1960s. He said that in 1969, composer Jon Lord wrote a roll and roll concerto for a joint performance of Deep Purple and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

He said the conservative Sydney Symphony Orchestra did not seem too enthusiastic about the concert, but the young people in the audience were crazy about it.

Prof. Ruf noted that Lord was a classical pianist and composer who succeeded in inspiring the fusion of rock and classical music. Another similar example can be found in jazz guitarist John Mclaughlin, who founded Mahavishnu Orchestra, a jazz-rock fusion band.

Prof. Ruf said musicians must be well versed in both classical and pop music before they can succeed in fusing them.

Prof. Ruf visited Taiwan for the first time in 2015, conducting GermanPops Orchestra in Taiwanese indie band Sodagreen’s concert.
